Driver killed in crash near Delungra yet to be identified

DNA tests are still being carried out to positively identify the driver, believed to be from Victoria, killed in Monday night's fatal crash near Delungra.

The sedan in which the driver was killed was travelling east on the Gwydir Highway about 9pm when it collided head-on with a semi-trailer.

The car burst into flames on impact.

Inverell duty officer Inspector Rowan O'Brien said police were still waiting on DNA evidence in order to positively identify the victim.

The driver of the truck was not injured but was treated for shock at Inverell hospital.

The cause of the accident is not yet known and local detectives are still investigating the matter, but police previously said the car crossed into the path of the oncoming semi.
