The Guardian Angels Bikers will run their first poker run on the June long weekend in aid of Little Wings.
Co-organiser Adrian Simshauser said he’d wanted to fundraise for children with cancer for a long time.
“I did a cancer thing for one of my friends who had lymphoma a few years ago and I’ve always wanted to do something for kids with cancer,” he said.
“When I saw Little Wings on the TV and the Patrick Coombes story of how they took him to Dubbo Zoo, I decided to fundraise for them.”
Emma Coombes, from Manilla, was at Tamworth Airport yesterday when the Little Wings flight touched down to lend her support to the organisation that gave so much joy to son Patrick, who passed away in January from an inoperable brain tumour.
Mr Simshauser said he hoped the poker run would become an annual fundraiser for the service.
“We want to try to keep Little Wings flying because it needs a lot of help,” he said.
“It’s free of charge and takes the stress off the parents and child that’s got to have the treatment.”
The keen motorcyclist said they hoped to attract between 300 and 500 riders to the inaugural event, which was supported by The Pub Anglers Club.
“If we can get 500, I’ll be ecstatic,” Mr Simshauser said.
Pilot and Little Wings founder Kevin Robinson said it was “fantastic” that the motorcyclists had organised the fundraiser.
“It brings out the best in the people and community,” he said.
“For them to do something like that helps us to help more people, so it’s brilliant.”
Mr Robinson said this would be the first fundraiser for the young organisation.
“We haven’t done anything else because we’re only in the first 12 months of operation,” he said.
“We are getting the name out there now and that’s something that will develop over time and we’ll start to do a bit more of.
“We’ve self-funded through our own businesses, but it will become unsustainable without community support or businesses coming on board.”
The Ride to Ridge Poker Run leaves The Pub on Saturday, June 7 and returns on June 9.
