Veterans who are unable to march any longer or find it difficult to get to the parade can travel in style with their comrades, thanks to World War II jeep owners throughout the region.

Jeep owner Carl Flannery said he loved helping the veterans attend the march.

“I love meeting the diggers on the day and assisting them,” he said.

“We pick them up from home and drop them back after the parade. I love hearing the stories.”

Mr Flannery said they were heroes who served our country well. “If they were capable of driving, I’d gladly let them,” he said. 

He will take Charles Nunn to the dawn service.

The Tamworth march attracts jeep drivers from all over the state – Sydney, Taree and Wollongong.

Mr Flannery said the jeeps can’t go in the Sydney parade, so they came to Tamworth because it was relaxed.

World War II veteran Les Chillingworth said his grandchildren now wore his medals on Anzac Day. 

Mr Chillingworth served in New Guinea and said there were only about four of his war mates left spread across Sydney, Newcastle and Goulburn. 

“All the people who should be here, aren’t here,” he said.

“You miss ’em.”
