At the completion of 525 matches over three days, the pair took out their respective singles titles from a field of 230 players across all grades.

Taylor had to overcome the top seed Sean Carson in the final, while Costelloe also had to topple the top seed.

Carson was out of touch and went down in two sets, although it wasn’t so easy for the women’s champ.

Women’s top seed Melissa Anderson put up a great fight in one of the games of the tournament.

The three-set battle consisted of 34 games, with the first set going to Costelloe 9-7.

Tamworth Tennis Club pro Jarrod Campbell said  the quality of tennis was getting better every year.

Both winners, as well as Carson, are part of the new Country Starz program.

Country Starz is a Tennis Australia initiative designed to help young players be able to play more tournaments.

Out of the full squad of 12 players, eight were in Tamworth for the Easter Open, with all five boys making the quarter-finals.

Gunnedah’s young tennis star Gabbi O’Gorman played well to make the semi-final but was beaten by  Anderson.

Walcha’s Eleanor McNaught was another local who excelled in the tournament that attracted players from all over the state and Queensland.

McNaught featured in both the C Grade women’s and 14s doubles final.

Despite the loss, the tournament will be good for the young players’ careers as it carries a silver level AMT status.

That means that players not only receive prize money but also points that count towards a national ranking.
