This was the day William and Kate, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, visited the show and did a walk-through of the sheep and cattle pavilion.
The Hill sisters – Sophie, 9, Penny, 7, and Olivia, 6 – had been invited by their grandmother, Tina Vickery, to meet the royals after Mrs Vickery was one of the lucky winners of a ballot to meet the couple.
Each ballot winner was assigned two tickets – but Mrs Vickery got lucky, because someone else who won was unable to attend, so she was given four tickets and was then able to take her three excited grand-daughters.
The sisters were sitting on a haybale waiting when the royal aides swept through and asked them if they wanted to actually meet the duchess and present their flower posy.
When Kate walked through to look at the shearing demonstration, she stopped and spoke to the girls.
“She asked us if we were sisters; she said they were her favourite flowers,” Sophie said. “She said the sheep were so still and they looked like they needed a shear,” Penny said.
“She said it looks like they’re getting a giant haircut.”
Olivia said: “She said ‘My hair’s getting a bit woolly – I need a haircut’.”
Proud mum Lisa said: “She was incredibly engaging with them.
“We went down with the sole purpose of seeing the duchess and going to the show.
“None of our friends would believe it – they just said: ‘Oh yeah, good luck’.”
