Mr Northey had lived in Manilla for about 10 years after moving to the region and living in Watsons Creek from 1986.
He is survived by his wife Raelene and two sons, Lloyd and Reid, and their families.
Mr Northey served in the army in South Australia during the 1960s and was president of the Manilla RSL Sub-branch until his death last week.
He was also heavily involved in the Rural Fire Service in Watsons Creek with Parry Shire and was captain of the brigade for many years.
Mr Northey was one of the driving forces behind modernising the Watsons Creek brigade and was also involved in the Manilla Lions Club
He was remembered as someone who always stood up for the battler and fought for people who needed help, would always meet you with his customary greeting “G’day mate” – and would always have a bush story to tell about his time droving as a young man or his time on the railways.
Mr Northey died in Tamworth hospital surrounded by family and friends on April 10 after an illness. He was buried in Manilla on Thursday, and will be sorely missed by his comrades on Anzac Day.
