The Brumbies were lobbying Super Rugby governing body SANZAR to have an Anzac Day fixture against a New Zealand side every year to continue on from next week's game against reigning champions Waikato Chiefs at Canberra Stadium.
Since 1995, Essendon and Collingwood have fought it out at the MCG on Anzac Day, with the fixture starting with a stunning draw.
Then NRL clubs St George and the Sydney Roosters began their own Anzac rivalry in 2002, before the Melbourne Storm and New Zealand Warriors also got involved in 2009.
The Brumbies started preparing their requests to SANZAR for next year's draw, of which the Anzac Day clash will be a significant part, and they will submit that later this week.
Brumbies interim chief executive Doug Edwards said it wasn't possible to play the same Kiwi team each year, because the structure of the Super Rugby draw meant they would play the Chiefs away next year.
The Canterbury Crusaders and Otago Highlanders were possible opponents in 2015 for Anzac Day's 100th anniversary.
Falling on a Saturday, the Brumbies want to hold the clash the night before to avoid the centenary celebrations.
"Especially with the ties to the War Memorial and government in Canberra, we just think the logical home of an Australia versus New Zealand traditional game on Anzac Day should be in the nation's capital so that's why we're pushing for it," Edwards said.
"Ideally you'd like to be playing one of the top teams on Anzac Day in Canberra."
The Brumbies want to make it about more than just the rugby by carrying on the memorial vibe of the day.
All four living Victoria Cross holders - Warrant Officer Keith Payne, 80, Corporal Mark Donaldson, 35, Corporal Benjamin Roberts-Smith, 35, and Corporal Daniel Keighran, 30 - will be there, as will a military band, and there will be multiple two-up venues around the stadium.
The Royal Military College will play the Australian Defence Force Academy as a curtain raiser.
The Brumbies were also investigating a combined ticket with Trans-Tasman netball team NSW Swifts, who play Southern Steel at AIS Arena on Anzac Day.
Edwards was hoping it would help turn around declining crowds, which are quickly becoming a problem across all the football codes around the country.
"We're putting on as much as we can to get people along," he said.
"It should be a cracker of a game, the two finalists from last year, we're on top of the Australian conference, we're starting to get a couple of players back [from injury], so I reckon it will be a great game and a good thing for Canberra to come and see."
Also in the Brumbies' submission to SANZAR will be avoiding big events like Skyfire and the Canberra Show, both of which have affected crowds this season.
While this year the Brumbies have a bye over Easter, Edwards was keen to change that next season - if they get the right opponent.
"It depends on who you're playing. I think the last time we filled the stadium was against the [NSW] Waratahs on Easter Sunday back in about 2007 so if there was a game on Easter we certainly wouldn't shy away from it," Edwards said.
The Brumbies players are enjoying a short break and will return to training on Thursday.
