GUNNEDAH:
ANNUAL BIRD SALE AND EXPO
GUNNEDAH is set to be a flutter of activity this weekend as a flock of colourful birds and their enthusiastic owners will fly into town for the 19th annual Gunnedah Bird Sale and Expo.
The Gunnedah Basketball Stadium will be bustling on Saturday from 10am with exhibitors, bird lovers, buyers and noise from the variety of breeds on show.
The event is one of the biggest gatherings of bird enthusiasts in Australia and Saturday’s turnout will attract sellers from all over the country.
It also attracts rare and exotic breeds of birds, including
quakers and blue and gold macaws.
Bird entries are to be at the stadium by Friday from 5pm-8.30pm or Saturday from 7am-9am, with doors open to the public at 10am.
Bird entry fees are $1 per bird, with a four bird per box rule.
Admission for the general public is $2.
Trade stands will be set up in the Griffiths Pavillion from 8am and a barbecue will be held on the night at the Gunnedah Services and Bowling Club, at a cost of $20 per person.
Last year’s sale attracted close to 4400 exhibits, with one of the most expensive birds, a blue black-headed caique’s price tag reading $35,000,while the asking price for a scarlet macaw was $12,000.
The sale has gone from strength to strength since its inception in 1997, when the Namoi Valley Aviculture Club (NVAC) hosted its first bird sale in the Griffith Pavillion at the Gunnedah Showground.
The following year it was moved to the PCYC to accommodate both trade stands and birds.
The sale quickly outgrew the PCYC and was relocated to the Judi Guest Basketball Stadium.
In 2005, the sale was split with the club utilising the nearby Griffith Pavillion to house the trade stands. All inquiries and bookings to 0447 749 971.

The junior soccer season also kicks off at Wilson Park on Saturday morning, as does netball on the courts at the same location.
The Glen Innes Clay Target Club’s monthly shoot is on at the range at the Stonehenge Recreation Ground from 1pm on Saturday, while the Highland Hunting and Target Club members also contest their first April shoot from 10 am at the Pistol Club range off Bradley’s Lane.
