"FIFA's under real pressure here because FIFA is on message about using football to improve's people's lives, so how can you give the hosting rights to a country where the most basic human rights are ignored."

"I'm not sure what clauses there are in the contract for the hosting rights which would allow FIFA to take the World Cup to take away from Qatar on this basis but I'm hoping they can."

"In any case I don't believe FIFA can possibly allow the World Cup to go ahead in Qatar unless these conditions are vastly improved.

"Now that would be a massive social move for Qatar but it has to happen, otherwise the World Cup should be taken away."

A report last week issued by the International Trade Union Commission stated that a staggering 1,200 workers have already died since 2010, when Qatar was handed the rights to host the 2022 World Cup, and a conservative estimate predicts 4,000 migrant construction workers will die as a result of the labour conditions before the competition begins.

Murray told SEN this morning that while FIFA had made preliminary moves to precipitate change in the situation, more had to be done.

"What FIFA's done is sought some explanation and some signs of improvement from the Qataris," Murray said.

"Now the Qataris issued a statement last month which FIFA looked at but those are pretty lukewarm improvements that they pledged, for instance it is still against the law for workers in Qatar to organise themselves into organised bodies and speak up."

"FIFA has responded by saying that they will send a delegation to Doha in the near future and talk some more and examine some more."
