The carnage of the crash littered the Uralla Rd just out of town after a Holden Commodore collided with a Ford Laser about 8.30am on Wednesday.
The two-month-old baby felt the full force of the crash in the back of the Commodore but despite frantic efforts to save her, she died at the scene. The tragic incident has rocked the family’s home town of Armidale.
“It’s a very tragic incident,” Armidale Inspector Chris McKinnon said. “Not only for the family but also for emergency services that attended the scene.”
Passersby including police officers worked with emergency crews that rushed to the site to try and free those trapped in the white Commodore.
The 20-year-old mother of the baby suffered a broken pelvis and wrist, as well head injuries and was freed from the wreckage after the doors were removed from the crumpled Holden.
She was airlifted to Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition.
Her 22-year-old partner and the father of the baby was rushed to hospital with critical injuries.
“The male is believed to have suffered a fracture to the base of his skull and was being airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital,” Inspector McKinnon said.
The 47-year-old woman behind the wheel of the Holden, believed to be the grandmother of the baby, suffered bruising to her chest and was taken to Armidale hospital, along with her son, a 20-year-old front-seat passenger who sustained broken ribs and internal injuries.
Inspector McKinnon said the woman driving the Ford was also taken to hospital with minor injuries.
“Her son was in the car and he was uninjured,” he said.
The crash closed the road during the morning rush as emergency services worked to clear the wreckage and mop up a fuel spill.
Police confirmed the road was wet as the Commodore, travelling south, collided with the Ford travelling in the opposite direction.
Crash investigators from Tamworth moved in quickly to try and piece together the moments leading up to the tragic accident.
“The crash investigation unit will make a thorough investigation and determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident,” Inspector McKinnon said.
Inspector McKinnon said police were urging motorists to drive to the conditions and be careful in the wet. A report will be prepared for the coroner.
