The woman, 90, was inside her home on Winston Place when she heard a knock at the front door at 11pm last night.
Two males allegedly kicked the front door in before one of them armed himself with a piece of broken timber and struck the woman several times.
The males demanded money, however, the woman did not have anything to give them and they fled the scene empty-handed.
Police and NSW Ambulance paramedics attended the scene and the woman received treatment for lacerations to her forehead, shoulder and wrist.
Detectives from Oxley Local Area Command are looking for two males described as being aged in their early teens with one wearing a white-coloured hooded top.
They urge anyone with information about the identity and whereabouts of the males to contact Tamworth Police.
Police are urging anyone with information about this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page: https://www1.police.nsw.gov.au/.
