Dubbed Moonbi Kitchen Rules, the epic year-long competition concluded on Saturday when contestants sharpened their claws one last time and cast their final votes.
The idea to replicate the format of the hugely popular cooking competition came one night last year as the friends were discussing the latest machinations on the show.
It was decided each of the couples would take turns hosting a dinner party where, just like in the series, they would produce three courses to be judged.
Stuart Pearse, who, with partner Debbie Janes, played the roles of judges Manu Feildel and Pete Evans for the finale on Saturday, said it had been a terrific – but stressful – experience.
“Everyone’s had a ball – it’s been absolutely brilliant,” he said.
“Even though we’re all friends, there’s still a lot of pressure when it’s your turn to cook.
“The amount of pressure that’s been involved has been incredible, because you’re working so hard to get all the meals out at the same time and looking and tasting the same.”
The competing couples have a nervous two-week wait ahead until they get together again to count the all-important votes that will determine which kitchen rules.
While bragging rights are at stake, the winning team will also receive a painting from fellow contestant and artist Penny Shephard – the daughter of cartoonist Larry Pickering.
Despite the competition sharpening their culinary skills, Mr Pearse said he doubted any of the couples would be seen on future seasons of the show.
“The show has inspired us to do it, and everybody we talk to about it says it’s a great idea,” he said.
“I would say it has inspired anybody to apply for My Kitchen Rules, but it has inspired people to look at what they’ve been cooking and upgrade their style of cooking.”
