Zonta, with the aim of advancing the status of women worldwide, held an International Women’s Day dinner at the Tamworth Community Centre where Ms Moore was guest speaker.
She has been the Lord Mayor of Sydney since 2004 and prior to that was an independent member of the NSW Legislative Assembly from 1988 to 2012, representing the electorates of Bligh and Sydney. More than 140 women attended the event, which has become a regular feature of the city’s International Women’s Day celebrations.
Another annual event to mark the occasion is the announcement of the 2014 NSW Woman of the Year, which was revealed yesterday and featured local woman Fiona Simson, the president of the NSW Farmers’ Association.
Mrs Simson, from Premer, was one of four finalists for the award, which was won by Turia Pitt, a mining engineer and burns survivor who now shares her experiences with audiences around the country.
Ms Pitt is actually making a visit to the region next Thursday as a guest of the Upper Gwydir Landcare Association to launch a leadership project.
