The State Crime Command’s Child Abuse Squad arrested the 19-year-old Tamworth man yesterday after a 17-month investigation.
The alleged attack stems back to September 11, 2012, when a 16-year-old girl was home alone and heard a knock at the front door of her family’s Tamworth home.
About 11.30pm, the girl answered the door before two men allegedly forced their way in and attacked the 16-year-old.
Detectives will allege in court one of the males held the teenager down while the second man sexually assaulted her.
After sometime the men fled the scene before the girl’s mother returned home.
The woman reported the incident to police before the Child Abuse Squad’s local officers began an investigation.
After a breakthrough in the case, detectives arrested a 19-year-old local man in Tamworth.
He has been charged with aggravated sexual assault in company and aggravated break and enter.
The man, who was a juvenile at the time of the alleged incident, was refused bail before he was put before Tamworth Children’s Court late yesterday.
The 19-year-old can’t be named for legal reasons and was refused bail by Magistrate Roger Prowse.
The case is due to return to court in April.
