FOUR Tamworth riders braved the elements to ride in the first round of the NSW BMX State Series held at the Southlake BMX track in Wollongong last weekend.
The race marked the start of the NSW racing calendar for the year and the quartet from the Tamworth Bicycles BMX Race Team recorded good results, making finals in all competitive events entered.
The track conditions were less than perfect, with massive rainfall over the weekend turning Southlake into a “lake” with quite a few riders opting to pull out rather than ride in muddy, wet conditions.
Kaitlyn Heywood finished seventh in her final in the 11-year-girls, riding solidly all day.
Younger brother Mason, competing in the 7 Boys Sprockets, started the day cautiously, not taking a liking to the conditions or the mud in practice but, after a quick clothing change, managed to improve with each ride of day.
Dan Morris, having his first full hit- out as part of his Gunnedah RSL and Bowling Club NIAS Lonestar scholarship, rode two classes, the 16 boys and 15-16 cruisers.
He finished third in the 16 Boys final and had a slide out in the cruiser final while going for the lead.
He rated the conditions as bad as any he has ridden over the last five or six years.
Martin Heywood, riding in the 30-34 Cruiser Men, finished a good third, managing to keep out of trouble all day until it was time to take a team photo when he just couldn’t get his hair right so opted not to pose.
The Tamworth quartet team thanked their sponsors –Tamworth Bicycles, Fitness Plus, Lloyd SignCo and Amigos Car Detailing – for their support and now prepare to travel to Canberra this weekend for the ACT Championships.
