“It’s bloody beautiful ... you just dip it in some cold water and your face is like a fridge,” Mr McFarlane said.
For the past 35 years, the distinctive facial hair has been Mr McFarlane’s constant companion in life – until now.
The East Tamworth local has decided to lop it off, along with all the other hair on his head, to raise dollars for charity.
“It won’t change my personality but I’m a bit nervous about how it will look,” he said.
“It will be like a fresh start in life, I suppose.”
Next month at Tamworth City Bowling Club, Mr McFarlane will come beard to face with a barber and his trusty clippers.
The price for Mr McFarlane’s indignity is $10,000 – a sum he plans to donate to prostate and testicular cancer research.
The 59-year-old has even decided to donate his “slug” – an extra piece of hair at the back of his head – to Look Good, Feel Better, an organisation that donates wigs to cancer sufferers undergoing chemotherapy.
