The fire is burning in a south-easterly direction towards the township of Rocky Glen, 35kms north-east of Coonabarabran, and has burnt more than 100 hectares.
The Rural Fire Service has issued a warning to people who are not prepared to leave now in an easterly direction towards Gunnedah.
"If you are staying with your property, make final preparations now and seek shelter as the fire front arrives," a RFS spokesman said.
The Oxley Highway has been closed to all traffic 25km east of Coonabarabran. Eastbound motorists are being diverted at the Newell Highway. Westbound motorists are being diverted at the Black Stump Way.
"Under these conditions, fires can be difficult to control. Embers may be blown ahead of the fire, creating spot fires. These spot fires may threaten your home earlier than the predicted main fire front." the RFS spokesman said.
