There were plenty of chances with 100 metres to go but Fitting Finale (Geoff Snowden) finished too well and grabbed Aimalac Burra (Jodi Worley) in the final couple of bounds with a length to Cryon in third place, for its first win for Angela Bourke, Belinda Lenehan, Tammy Brooks and Wendy Jackson.
“We raced another mare together but it drowned and Paul (trainer Grills) gave us this one to race,” Bourke explained.
As he watched the replay, Grills said the winner had always been reasonably handy.
“She showed a heap of guts there (at the 150m mark when there were many chances),” he said.
Grills is facing an accommodation quandary with more horses coming into his hands.
“I’ve only got 10 stalls and I’ve got eight in work at present,” he said.
“ Today I’ve been told of two more coming so I hope I don’t get offered any more!”
Local hope Mr Maturity (Chelsea Jokic), trained at Grafton by Greg Kilner, was well supported and led early with Hide’N’Seek (Darren Jones).
The two opened up a two- length advantage at the 600 metres before Mr Maturity edged clear and still led by a length at the 100 metres, but the others were too strong in the latter stages.
