Tamworth program targets homelessness problem

RURAL Homelessness New England is a pilot program, established in 2010 to address the homelessness problem in the northern region.

Co-ordinator Trish Heffernan said the program worked with other agencies to help homeless people and those at risk obtain and maintain housing.

“We assist them to assist themselves,” Ms Heffernan said.

She said the program had a good success rate and provided an integrated service, through its collaboration with other organisations.

NWASP was also formed in 2010 and aims to help Aboriginal people move from crisis accommodation to long-term social or private housing.

It also links clients to information and other associated services, including mental health and drugs and alcohol services.
