Balinese police say laboratory results of medicines, fluids and vomit found in the resort room of a Sunshine Coast mother and daughter, who mysteriously died a week ago, show no evidence of foul play, which cleared the final hurdle for the repatriation of the bodies.

The bodies of Noelene Bischoff, 54, and her daughter Yvana, 14, arrived in Brisbane in the early hours of Saturday morning. The mother and daughter died within hours of each other a week ago on Saturday morning at the start of their Bali adventure.

At Sanglah Hospital morgue, where the bodies were being kept, Karangasem police chief detective Adnan Pandibu, on Friday said: “We cannot reveal the exact details of the lab result. We can only advise that based from the result we found [no] early indication of criminal activity.”

He had a meeting with Australian consulate staff, an Australian Federal Police agent and a representative from Antar-Bangsa Funeral Service to discuss the repatriation of the bodies earlier on Friday.

“We have no objections to the returning of the bodies as per the family request,” Mr Pandibu said.

The 29 different types of medication, bottles of mineral water, Fanta, Baileys and tea, and one plastic bag of vomit, discovered in the Bischoff’s Padang Bai Beach Resort room, were tested.

For police chief detective Adnan Pandipu, the deaths of Noelene Bischoff and her daughter, may not have been that mysterious at all.

Pandipu will not hazard a guess what was behind the sudden and tragic deaths of the holidaying mother and daughter in the early hours of January 4 but he is confident an autopsy in Bali or in Queensland will reveal it conclusively.

''The autopsy will speak volumes,'' the 35-year-old inspector says.

Twice, through the Australian consulate-general, he had tried to convince the Bischoff family of the importance of conducting an autopsy, only to be rebuffed. The subsequent advice from his seniors in Denpasar, the island's main city, was to abide by the family's wishes.

So perhaps it was not surprising when, after a week of media stories that hypothesised the cause of the deaths of the vacationing pair, even though the answer may be straightforward, his frustration soon bubbled to the surface.

Time and again this week, Pandipu and his colleagues in the little two-storey police office towards the end of a twisting, dual-carriage highway were rung by journalists demanding answers as to why a 54-year-old health professional and her teenage daughter could become so violently ill and meet with an excruciating death in his precinct.

His easygoing demeanour slipped when confronted with the accusation that some in Australia did not trust local officials to perform the autopsies truthfully.

''If you want to talk about trust, then you have to ask yourself why don't trust,'' Pandipu says. ''If you don't trust the authorities will treat you well, when you come and visit a place, then you shouldn't come.

''Australians come here every year … They come here and have no problem.''

He says reports that he was delaying the release of the Bischoffs' remains were untrue. On Wednesday, he received from the family's appointed undertaker a four-page waiver requesting the police release the bodies from being used as evidence. The document was filled out by Desley Rowe, Noelene Bischoff's sister.

He had been informed by the undertaker not to act too quickly because the family was working out insurance details.

''Go ahead. Conduct the autopsies [in Queensland],'' he says, smiling but with a hint of exasperation. ''What do we have to gain by keeping the bodies?''

The Padang Bai Beach Resort seems the last place a holiday would lead to horror.

With its rooms starting at $65 a night, it is the nicest of a string of modest but comfortable-looking hotels along Silayukti Beach, with stunning ocean views. Two doors down, the Kenti Hotel had a deal this week offering rooms for as little as $25 a night if guests wanted to splurge on hot water.

This is a quiet, out-of-the-way part of Bali, about two hours' drive from the airport in Denpasar. Hotels here depend on the steady flow of backpackers and divers drawn by the area's coral reefs. Ferries from Lombok call in at the terminal a short distance away.

The Pandang Bai Beach Resort's front desk shares space with Absolute Scuba. But, on a rare sunny day, in the middle of the rainy season, there was little sign of life at the hotel's raised infinity pool or the modest Buddha Bar and Restaurant.

Staff declined to speak with reporters. A woman who worked at the front desk, who identified herself only as Ayu, 22, says the manager, Giovanni Bareato, had not been in and she did not know when he would be back.

''We'll probably just stay away from the seafood,'' says Andrew Flint, a 28-year-old medical student from Melbourne, who had just arrived from the Gili Islands off Lombok with his partner, Catherine Mills, a primary school Indonesian language teacher.

''It could have happened anywhere if it was an accident,'' Flint says.

Behind the couple, the Bischoffs' townhouse-style villa was still cordoned off with fluorescent yellow police tape. It was not clear how many of the hotel's 22 rooms were occupied.

At the Sanglah Hospital, Dr Dudut Rustyadi, the head of forensics at the hospital's morgue, is cautious not to suggest definitive causes.

But he says: ''If someone suddenly dies with no sign of trauma then we must think that they are sick or had some sort of accident.''

He says when two people die suddenly at the same time it normally points to poison or a severe allergic reaction.

''Everything is possible,'' says Rustyadi, who has conducted about 500 autopsies in 11 years, nearly all with conclusive causes of death.

Rustyadi was confident that, should an autopsy be carried out in Queensland as the family wishes, the results would be conclusive, despite the delay since their deaths last Saturday.

On the wall of the mortuary's administrative office is a whiteboard with a schematic of the facility's four freezers. The Bischoffs' names are neatly entered on the board along with the date they arrived, January 4.

The Bischoffs' case is not as straightforward as most that come here.

A middle-aged woman runs through a flip board of records of all the remains entrusted to them last year and finds that the bodies of 17 foreigners passed through before they came to a final rest outside these walls. All those cases stemmed from prosaic circumstances: a retiree's heart attack; a surfer's penchant for speed atop a scooter without a helmet.

Rustyadi's most recent autopsy was to determine why a 57-year-old lecturer from Malaysia collapsed and died in front of his students in November. He determined a heart attack was the cause of death.

''The results were accepted,'' Rustyadi says.

He says he understands the Bischoff family's need to find answers.

''Of course the family is surprised,'' Rustyadi says. ''We only want to honour their wishes.''
