Last year the Simon Hood-coached side claimed the silverware. They’re up in Armidale this week hoping to repeat that effort in the Walter Taylor Shield.
Chris Paterson has this year’s Under 14s side and expects them to be competitive.
“Batting will be out strength. Three out of our top four are in the Central North (Kookaburra Cup) side,” Paterson said.
“We put a lot of emphasis on getting runs.
“Then bowling, we’re more looking to contain.”
Toby Whale, Jye Paterson and Tyson Rennie are the Central North trio and will shoulder a lot of the run-scoring responsibility.
They have a busy two weeks ahead of them, completing this week’s Tamworth Under 14 Carnival and then heading to Newcastle with the Central North Zone side for the Kookaburra Cup Country Under 14 Championship.
“We’re looking forward to it,” said Tyson Rennie.
“Toby and I will open the batting,” Jye Paterson added, “and Tyson will come in at four.”
It means this week will also be a good week of practice for the trio.
So far this season the Under 14 side, which plays in the Hunter Valley Junior Cricket Council competition, has done pretty well with the bat.
Jye Paterson has scored 80 and 110 in his two innings while Tyson Rennie made 70 not out in their last game Dungog.
Harrison Frear and AJ Pretorious then round out a strong top five.
Jack Diebold and Blake Murphy will spearhead the attack.
Both are playing third grade with their respective clubs.
“We’ve got a couple of medium pacers in Luke Constable and Kyle Cullen,” Paterson said.
They’ve also got spin well-covered with Paterson, Whale and Aaron Madirazza.
That’s probably, if anything the main part of their attack, (Chris) Paterson said.
“The week will be good. The boys haven’t had a lot of cricket. They’ve only played the two games after receiving two forfeits, losing to Maitland and beating Dungog in our last game.”
Tamworth will face Nambucca/Bellingen first-up today in a 50-over-a-side morning. They play Coffs Harbour in the afternoon T25 game. Both games are at Dick Edwards Oval (Riv 1).
Clarence plays Northwestern Wolves (Riv 2) and Coffs Harbour matches up against West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook (Max Sutton Oval - Riv 3) in the other T25 game.
Clarence then plays WPHC at Riverside this afternoon and Nambucca/Bellingen tackles Northwestern Wolves at Max Sutton Oval.
The six teams then play 50 over-a-side games tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday with final and playoff games on Friday.
