Homes saved as Gypsy Lady is sent into battle

THE lady of the skies helping to protect the people of the region has flown into Tamworth for a four-day stint and has already helped to save homes in Warral.

Gypsy Lady, an Erickson sky crane, will be based in Tamworth for four days on standby in case of bushfires erupting in the area.

The crew has come to Australia from a week fighting bushfires in Greece.

Pilot Don Anderson said Central Point, Oregon-based crew were there to support the Rural Fire Service volunteers who did the hard work.

“The RFS called us in when the heatwave was expected and the chances are, once a cool change comes through, we’ll relocate back to Bankstown,” Mr Anderson said.

The crew was involved in the Springwood, Wisemans Ferry and Lithgow fires last year with the Erickson Sky Crane contract starting in October last year.

Back home in St Louis, Missouri, Mr Anderson said his home had this week been hit by three inches of snow.
