TCC publicity officer Mal Nash said the effort by former Tamworth junior Alex Nicholls to win a silver medal at Junior World Championships (time trial) was an outstanding example of the talented young riders the city has been producing.
He pointed to the fact 21-year-old Sam Spokes is gearing up to ride in a National Road Championship and then possibly the Sun Tour and Tour Down Under events before heading back to Europe and link with his professional team.
Mitch Carrington also raced in Europe last year, his second riding sojourn to the continent.
“It’s been a good year for many Tamworth riders with the standard of local races and good numbers being so high results have been good in all forms,” Nash said.
“Jeremy Bartlett raced at the Chandler Velodrome in Brisbane last week and won the Lang Trophy Masters Wheel Race as well as winning the Masters Derby Final.
“The Saunders sisters had good results all year with so many outstanding results. Tori was State U17 Time Trial champion and Jess was the State U15 500m Time Trial champion. Alan Spokes won a gold and two silver medals in Australian Masters Championships at Goulburn and Ray Griffin won two silver medals at the Masters and two Masters gold medals at NSW championship.
“Fraser Ashford also won a Masters road race.”
He said local criterium racing restarts January 12 at Goddard Lane and runs through to Easter.
