Tamworth Jockey Club ran its popular Christmas Eve meeting on Tuesday and today it’s the turn of Inverell and Quirindi.
Scone goes around again on Saturday and then it’s back to Inverell next Wednesday for its huge Inverell Cup meeting.
Not to be outdone, Wallabadah Jockey Club also goes around on New Year’s Day, staging its 162nd Wallabadah Cup, a 1500m race named in honour of club stalwart Maurice Murphy this year.
Nominations for next Wednesday’s Inverell Cup were good while the Wallabadah Cup nominations were light, as usual.
While the Inverell Jockey Club received 136 nominations for its big day, Wallabadah Jockey Club had just 33 nominations for its five-race non-TAB meeting.
21 horses nominated for the $30,000 1400m Inverell Cup including recent Brisbane winner Clever Hans (Leon Davies), Coonabarabran Cup runner-up Emotional Outburst and last year’s Inverell Cup runner-up Universal Belief.
Jim Delaney trains Universal Belief and, while he had to settle for second in the Cup last year, he won the 1010m Shorts with Floral Insight.
The sprinter was one of 11 nominations for the $17,000 sprint.
Shorts nominations were extended until 11am tomorrow as were all five races at Wallabadah.
The 162nd Maurice Murphpy Memorial Wallabadah Cup (1500m) attracted seven nominations, including 2013 Cup winner Husisname.
The winner of the past three Louth Cups is raced and trained by Noel Boland at Branxton and will be having his 89th start next Wednesday.
He has won six of those starts for just over $70,000 in prizemoney.
