Volunteers from the Uniting Church in Marius St were working feverishly last week to pack food and gift hampers for 70 local families.
The hampers were distributed in time for tomorrow’s festivities to families who throughout the year had been referred to the church.
Parishioner Lorraine Furze said the hampers would assist families beset by money troubles or ill health to have a proper Christmas celebration.
“We’re very, very grateful for the people who donated,” she said.
“People have really given good quality stuff this year. We try to include in the hampers enough food for a decent meal or two and also a few Christmas treats as well.
“I think everyone deserves to have a bit of a sugar fix on Christmas Day.”
