Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson announced yesterday work would begin on the highly anticipated upgrade from Dampier to Bass streets in the next six months.
The plan involves the extension of Cole Rd onto the Oxley Highway and the construction of a two-lane roundabout at the Dampier St intersection.
A single-lane roundabout will also be built at the intersection of Cole Rd with the highway.
Mr Anderson said the news would be welcomed across the community.
“The Dampier St intersection has been a cause for concern for years, with many businesses and drivers complaining it was ‘an accident waiting to happen’ and the road surface on this part of the highway is rough and difficult to negotiate,” he said.
“The work will improve the condition of the road, road safety and traffic flow on this section of the highway.”
Tamworth Regional Council will carry out the upgrade and has been working closely with Roads and Maritime Services on the $7 million project.
Once detailed scoping and design works have been completed, it’s hoped the upgrade will begin by June.
The project is expected to take two years to complete.
