The annual January 1 once-a-year meeting will have five memorial races, club president Bill Kelly said.
“All is going well in preparation for this year’s race meeting, with volunteers and committee working hard,” Kelly said.
“This year we have a five-race memorial program with races named in honour of Maurice Murphy, Phil Carter, Hilton Ingall, Mervyn Lobsey and Wayne Fisher.
Two of the five, Maurice Murphy and Phil Carter, have passed away in the past 12 months, Kelly said.
“Maurice’s son is a vice-president of our club,” Kelly said.
“For the first time in 33 years Phil Carter won’t be selling our race books.”
Finding sponsors was a major problem for the club this year so they opted to name all five races after their departed friends and fellow committeemen.
The club will stage a final working bee on Monday, December 30.
“The old guard has been going well on the tractor and been out to slash the grass three or four times in the last month or so,” Kelly said.
“The track is looking good although we could do with a little bit more rain.”
The $8500 Maurice Murphy Memorial 162nd Wallabadah Cup (1500m) will be the feature race on the five-race January 1 program.
Nominations for that meeting close at 11am next Tuesday (December 24) along with nominations for the January 1 Inverell Cup meeting.
Meanwhile, Rapid Interference (Wayne Martyn) and Rothcote (David Hatch) share top weight for Thursday’s 2000m Murrurundi Cup.
