The 29-year-old fronted an out-of-sessions hearing in Tamworth Bail Court yesterday where he was ordered to remain in custody.
Police allege the man, who was accompanied by a woman, went to a Robert St unit before a verbal fight broke out with a resident just after 8.30am on Wednesday.
A 21-year-old neighbour intervened and asked the pair to leave before a scuffle broke out.
Police will allege the accused used a screwdriver to stab the neighbour once in the chest before he and the woman fled the scene.
Police were called to the unit block where they found the victim on the footpath suffering a stab wound.
He was rushed to hospital and then airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle in a serious condition, where he remains.
The 29-year-old was arrested at a home in Tingira St on Wednesday afternoon and was charged with maliciously wound with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm.
He will reappear in Tamworth Local Court on Monday.
