A Werris Creek NSW Fire and Rescue spokesman said the fire began about 10.15pm from what is believed to be an electric heater in the 56-year-old's bedroom. The fire tore through the room and several others before firefighters arrived on scene to extinguish the flames.
Six Werris Creek firefighters and a further six Quirindi firefighters responded, as well as Rural Fire Service (RFS) personnel, police and ambulance paramedics.
The Fire and Rescue spokesman said the fire was under control by 10.45pm and was completely extinguished by 11pm.
The interior was extensively damaged but the home is reportedly still structurally sound.One room was completely destroyed by the heat and smoke.
The man escaped the blaze with burn injuries to his feet and smoke inhalation and was treated by ambulance paramedics on scene before being taken to Tamworth hospital in a stable condition.
The man remained in a stable condition at Tamworth hospital this morning.
Police said their investigations were continuing but the fire was not being treated as suspicious.
