ORGANISERS are hoping to make next year’s McDonald’s Armidale Junior and Open tennis Tournament an even bigger event after a successful 2013 edition.
North West Tennis secretary Letitia Dennehy said the tournament was held “in fantastic tennis weather and in great spirit” last weekend.
“It was a very competitive tournament, with nearly 300 entries and players travelling from all over the State and interstate,” Dennehy said.
Events ranged from the under 10-year-olds to veterans, over 35s and parent and child.
Many local players ended up winning the events.
NEGS girl Kayla Wicks took out the much sought-after open singles women’s title by defeating Jessica Tickle convincingly 6-2, 6-0 and was then presented with the trophy by Gray Malone, the manager of New England Mutual which sponsors the event.
Wicks also won the open mixed doubles with Armidale player Brock Sherriff.
The men’s open title was taken by Rhys Johnston who defeated Tamworth up and comer Martin Russell, 6-4 7-5.
However, Martin then went on to win the under 18 boys’ final against 15-year-old Jack Reed of Barrabra.
Armidale coach Justin Sherriff, with partner Elle McNaught, won the B Grade mixed and McNaught also won the Under 12 girls’ event.
“In the 16 and under girls’ doubles, Faith Dennehy and Maddy Taylor, both Armidale players, put in a great effort and were runners-up to Angela George and Hayley Ingold,” Dennehy said.
Sawtell’s Andrew Lemin won the Under 16 boys’ title from talented Armidale 13-year-old Conor Dennehy.
In the younger age groups, nine-year old Charlie Pade won the under 10s boys’ event and Ella Cooke won in the girls.
The boys’ doubles was won by Armidale boy Ben Simmonds and partner Logan Dries.
Luke Field won the 12 boys’ singles and Andrew Osmond of Gunnedah beat Nathan Monk in a close final in the 14 boys, 3-6, 6-2, 4-6.
In the over 35 doubles, Justin Sherriff and Jarrod Campbell won in a round robin against Tim Dennehy and Danny Monk, an interesting match as they are all great friends.
Dennehy paid a special thank to all sponsors – McDonald’s, Precision Motors, New England Mutual, , Sportspower, 2AD radio station, The Wicklow Hotel, Ozboots, and The Armidale Business Center Physiotherapy and Ridgey Didge Pies.
