SAMUEL Johnson’s on a trip powered by a wheel, a prayer and an inspiring love for his sister.
The Aussie actor will roll into Tamworth tomorrow night as part of a 15,000km zig-zagging oddysey across Australia to raise money – and awareness – for breast cancer.
Best known for his roles on The Secret Life of Us, Crackerjack and Underbelly II, Johnson has watched his younger sister Connie fight cancer three times in her young life.
But this time is different – Connie is dying.
The mum-of-two has been diagnosed with breast cancer, which has spread to her lungs, liver, pelvis, spine and knee.
She has been given a life expectancy of six to 12 months.
Faced with the fight of her life, she set her brother the toughest challenge she could think of.
The goal? To set a new Guinness World Record for the most distance travelled on a unicycle, raise $1 million and spread her message of breast cancer awareness.
So far, Johnson has travelled nearly 11,000km and raised an incredible $828,872.
“My sister is an amazing woman – vibrant, compassionate and a fantastic mother,” Johnson, who will ride from Gunnedah today, said.
“After the diagnosis, I spoke to her about what she wanted her legacy to be and told her that I wanted to send her off with a bit of a bang.
“I was thinking she would say something like skydiving, but instead I’ve been given the challenge of a lifetime – unicycling around Australia and raising breast cancer awareness.”
Johnson will be at the Longyard Hotel tomorrow from 7pm for a meet- and-greet with locals and a bucket fundraiser.
