A TRUCK driver had a lucky escape yesterday morning when his prime mover overturned north of Tamworth.
The accident happened on the New England Highway about 500m north of the Moonbi lookout about 3.15am.
The truck, laden with fruit and vegetables, veered off the road into a table drain before hitting a tree, coming to rest on its side.
Police say the 37-year-old Tamworth driver was lucky to escape unscathed.
The accident closed the highway until one lane reopened about 6am. Much of the truck’s damage was in the cab and officers say the circumstances could have been much worse if he hadn’t been wearing his seatbelt.
A heavy vehicle salvage operation took several hours before both lanes of the highway reopened yesterday afternoon.
