SOUTHGATE and Tamworth Tigers enjoyed contrasting opening-round Tamworth men’s water polo competition wins on Friday night.
The Tigers got their title defence underway with a 13-2 win over the Tamworth U16s.
Southgate then pipped Eco Energy 7-6.
Southgate took the early advantage, with a double from Laarn White helping it to a 3-1 first quarter lead.
Eco Energy brought it back to 3-2 at half-time through Ryan Martin.
The margin hovered around one, with Jackson Sharpe (Eco Energy) and Henry Kelly (Southgate) netting doubles in the third quarter.
Martin followed up with a double in the final quarter but that was matched by Southgate, with goals to Kelly and Michael Sheedy to give it a one-goal win.
The Tigers also set their 11-goal win up in the first quarter, with Nathan Pyne, Matt Sandell, Chris Rowbottom, Mitch Salter and Jarrod Chester (2) all finding the back of the net for a 6-nil lead.
The 16s held them scoreless in the second quarter but the Tigers found their roar again in the third quarter, scoring three, with Sandell bagging a double.
They finished the game off with four, with Salter completing his treble.
Issac Moxon and Tony Fisk scored the 16s’ two goals, Moxon scoring in the third quarter and Fisk the fourth.
The competition continues this Friday night, with the women’s competition also starting.
