WESTDALE Public School produces plenty of gems and four of them are shining on stages across the region.
The Westdale Sapphires take their name from The Sapphires movie, but are making a name in their own right.
Barbara and Alyce Jerrard, Claudia Schneider and Maddy Johnson, who make up the Westdale Sapphires, said they loved celebrating their culture.
Aboriginal education officer Julie Fuller was moved to tears by the movie, as it reminded her and her friend of their own childhood, growing up on a mission, facing racism and being part of the stolen generation.
Before too long, Theresa Charlton sewed the girls’ outfits and The Westdale Sapphires were in showbiz.
The four students – three in Year 6 and one, Alyce, in Year 4 – perform three songs – Ngarra Buura Ferra, Can’t Help Myself and Treaty (from Yothu Yindi).
