A MAJOR road upgrade is imminent as Westdale residents push for safer road conditions.
Under the proposal, Cole Rd will be extended to the Oxley Highway first, with a single-lane roundabout where it meets the highway, then the highway between Dampier and Bass streets will be upgraded as funding becomes available.
A Roads and Maritime Services spokesman said the Cole Rd extension was due to start early next year.
“RMS and Tamworth Regional Council are working through design and cost considerations,” he said.
“The upgrade of Dampier St to Bass St is an important project that must be carefully planned, assessed and designed to ensure stakeholder concerns are considered.”
The RMS said the upgrade would provide a smoother and safer road, with improved traffic flow on the Oxley Highway in West Tamworth between Dampier and Bass streets.
This will reduce congestion and improve traffic flow.
The upgrade will include two 3.5- metre-wide traffic lanes, two-metre-wide shoulders in each direction and a dedicated central lane to separate turning and through traffic and a two-lane roundabout at the Oxley Highway and Dampier St intersection.
Tamworth Regional Council and Roads and Maritime Services have been working together on a strategy to improve the condition of the road, road safety and traffic flow on a section of the Oxley Highway between Dampier and Bass streets.
Residents had the chance to give the RMS feedback in August and early September.
The RMS spokesman said they were considering all feedback received during the submission period and a submissions report would be available shortly.
“The submissions report will outline community feedback received and provide response to all comments,” he said.
A petition is being run by Westdale residents concerned about the 80km/h speed limit and it now has about 300 signatures, with residents wanting the speed limit reduced.
A Roads and Maritime Services spokesman said they were also reviewing the speed zone on the Oxley Highway between Cook St and New Winton Rd.
The petition can be signed at Westdale Mini Mart.
This review into the speed limit is expected to be completed next month.
