A CAVITY in the brickwork of Attunga’s 100-year-old Anglican church has unravelled the mysteries of a century-old time capsule, with church warden Greg Scheimer finding 1913 newspapers and a message in a bottle a few weeks ago.
The discovery comes as the church, along with its entire Manilla parish, celebrates its centenary this weekend.
There’s been talk of a time capsule at the church for a few months after a newspaper article found by a member mentioned a bottle had been buried.
“An expert from Newcastle came up and thought it’d be near the plaque, and there was one little brick that was a different size to the rest of them,” church warden Larraine Abra said.
“The paper was well-preserved because it’s been protected by the weather. We haven’t undone the bottle because it has a cork, but there’s a rolled-up scroll in it and you can see some writing on it.”
The newspapers are from September and October, 1913.
“We were thinking of having it put under glass or something else done.”
The parish is now considering burying its own memento from 2013.
