JULIE and Col Hobday paid good money for Secret Smile and the four-year-old Victorian pacer vindicated their financial faith by winning on debut for the Inverell father and daughter training combination at Tamworth Paceway on Monday.
The son of Grinfromeartoear had the Hobdays smiling wide when Cameron Davies surged home over top odds-on favourite, Chilli Ice Maiden, for a 2m win.
“We got him before I went on holidays in Bali,” Julie Hobday said yesterday.
“I’d been watching him race down there (Victoria) with John Justice.
“We rang up and paid good money for him but he’s worth it. He’s trialled well at home but all the credit to dad and Phillip Allen. They’ve been shoeing him to stop him from hitting his knees.”
She said her father had done a “fantastic job” training the four-year-old and thought Cameron Davies’ drive was excellent as well.
The Tamworth Harness Racing Club staged an eight race program on Monday.
Armidale trainer Les Enks and his driver-son, Jeff, celebrated a winning double with Day Break Shannon and Bianca Shannon, the latter at the big odds of 60-1.
Winners also came from Uralla, Narrabri, Bendemeer, Tamworth and the Hunter Valley.
Sissie’s Beach Girl won for Uralla’s Peter Munsie, I Want Candywon for Narrabri’s Shepherdson stable and Gotta Feeling returned to the winners circle for Tamworth’s Ken Natty.
Bendemeer’s Len Clement had Brett Bates in the spider to win with Matter of Taste while Michael Formosa drove the Brendon Flaherty-trained Imageton to a second successive win at Tamworth for the Sawyers Gully stable.
The THRC races again on Wednesday, October 16, a night TAB meeting before also celebrating its annual Awards Presentation night at the Southgate Inn on Saturday, October 19.
That function starts 6.30pm, tickets are $30 a head.
While the THRC is preparing for that big night it is also readying for a huge Golden Guitar Carnival in January.
Three meetings will be run in that carnival, the first on Wednesday January 15 being highlighted by the Pub Group Gold Nugget.
