BENDEMEER Rugby League Football Club celebrated its 2013 Group 4 Second Division season at the Family Hotel on Saturday night where Rodney Rolls picked up the major award.
The big prop received the Tooty Hewson Memorial Trophy for best player on and off the field, Bendy’s secretary-treasurer Paul Hyson said.
“It capped a good season for him after he had been named the Group 4 Second Division Best and Fairest Award winner as well a few weeks ago at the annual Group 4 Presentation night in Gunnedah,” Hyson said.
“He is an outstanding young bloke.”
Leroy Murray was named best and fairest for the Mountain Men while Jay Chatfield received the Players’ Player Award.
Coaches’ award went to Chris Leslie and Rookie of the Year to Cameron McDonald.
Best Forward was Bruce Murray, Best Back Dwight Milgate and Clubman of the Year was Max Shearer.
Saturday’s awards night was a “good finish to a fair season”, Hyson reckoned.
“We started off ordinary but once we got a few players we came good.
“The back half of the season we went real well.
“It was just a shame we didn’t play that well in the semi against Dungowan.
“We had a few injuries and we didn’t play the way we wanted.
“But still, it was good and we had some good team spirit.
“There are a lot of young blokes in the side and we hope they stick around and we keep a good side for next season.”
He said the club could do with a few extra sponsors but also thanked the continued support of major sponsors such as the Family and Bendemeer hotels and Westdale Meats.
Club president Ron Lillicrap and he are hoping to continue the good work laid in the second half of the season in 2014 while coach Peter Cook is also keen to return and steer the path for his young players.
