NORTHERN Stars completed their State Under 19 Trials at Campbelltown with a third successive win at Raby Oval yesterday on a day where they had skipper Nick de Guisti and James Psarakis selected in the Country Under 19s.
After victories over two Country sides on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Northern Stars – a combined Central Northern Zone (CNZ) and North Coast Zone (NCZ) side – beat Sydney Blackcats by 45 runs yesterday.
The Stars made 6-221 and then dismissed the Sydney team for 176.
Unfortunately for the side, CNZ chairman Terry Psarakis said, “the other City side won the tournament on superior run rate”.
However, going through with three wins from three games was a great start to the new season, Northern Stars coach Jeff Cook said.
“It’s been a great week, fantastic,” Cook said.
“The boys punched above their weight.
“Everyone chipped in – it was a great team effort.”
Batting first yesterday, the combined CNZ and NCZ side’s 6-221 was headlined by opener Tobin Burvill.
He topscored with a fine 60 after being promoted from number five for the final game.
“Tobin had batted five on the first two days but was promoted to open yesterday after regular opener, Nathaniel Scott, suffered a finger injury fielding in Wednesday’s win over combined Southern/Illawarra,” Psarakis said.
De Guisti (41) and Psarakis (39) also made good runs.
They also picked up two wickets apiece.
De Guisti finished with 2-45 and Psarakis 2-24 while Bryan Warren (2-29) and Caleb Ziebel (2-25) also had good success.
“All the bowlers bowled well,” Cook added.
“The decks were pretty flat and the conditions not great today.”
Cook thought Narrabri’s left- arm leg spinner, Jake Brayshaw, bowled well yesterday and Maitland’s Rigby Vane-Wood bowled consistently well through the week.
Unluckiest of the five CNZ players was Tamworth keeper Matt Everett.
The low and slow decks made keeping tough and he had limited opportunities batting.
Psarakis and de Guisti now front up for Country under 19s at Blacktown next Tuesday and Wednesday for two one-day games from which the State Under 19s will be selected.
