IF THE “murder” of scarecrows cropping up like mushrooms around Bingara was designed to cause a fright, somebody forgot to tell little Madeline Standerwick.
The six-year-old has become firm friends with “Harry”, a scarecrow she helped build with her family at the front of their Heber St property ahead of the unique Wings ’n’ Things Festival.
Decked out in a Gwydir River Rats shirt and clasping an Aussie flag, Harry has almost become a member of the Standerwick family.
“I’m sometimes scared of him when it’s dark and I can see him in the shadows but I really like him during the day,” Madeline said.
“And we haven’t had a crow at our place since he’s been there.”
Dozens of weird and wonderful scarecrows are scattered around the town in readiness for the October long weekend event.
