LAWN bowls was the game but fun was the idea when the Men Of League Foundation (MOLF) staged a lawn bowls day at South Tamworth Bowling Club yesterday.
With Jim Hall, former international Dennis Tutty and Parramatta Eels stalwart John Baker representing the MOLF, there were plenty of stories retold by by all those who turned up.
Local MOLF president Kevin Robinson was delighted with the attendance.
“We’ve got a wonderful turnout,” Robinsonsaid.
“It was great to see Jim Hall, Dennis Tutty and John Baker come up.
“We’ve got a heap of the Narrabri boys and some from Manilla as well.
“North Tamworth RLFC, fresh from Friday night’s annual presentation night, was represented by president Peter Woolaston and John O’Meagher, who received an award for his service to the club.
“Bears coach Brad McManus was also on hand.
Eight former Narrabri former players also turned up in their mini bus.
The Narrabri Blues had also held their presentation night at the Narrabri Golf Club where Geoff Barrett was made a life member.
“We had to think of a reason to get him there,” Narrabri’s Keith Ford said.
They concocted a story luring Barrett to the function and to ultimately receive a great honour, life membership, for his many years of hard work and commitment.
“It was a big night,” Ford said.
“There were about 160 there.”
There were plenty of locals there at the bowls yesterday as well such as the “Manilla twins” Max Russell and Greg Cooper.
Dusty Russell also turned up in his magnificent Manly Sea Eagles top.
Russell and good mate, former England and Canterbury rugby league star Mick Adams, played the semi-final of their match play championship at Tamworth Golf Club on Saturday.
“We won too – beat Graeme and Dean York at the 19th,” Russell said.
“We led by two shots with two to play but went to water.
“But they rolled in a big 18 footer at the 18th to tie.”
Russell and Adams won at the first extra hole and now play the final in two weeks.
“Mick would have been here today,” Russell said.
“But he’s out at the Longyard playing in the Billabong Clubhouse charity golf day.”
