A MEMBER of one of Australia’s oldest rose-growing families helped the Walcha Garden Club celebrate a special 65th anniversary milestone.
Elizabeth Swane was the guest speaker at the 65th annual spring lunch of the club on September 6 and nearly 110 people, including members of Walcha, Dungowan, Quirindi, Nundle, Guyra, Tamworth and Armidale clubs, attended the event, held at the Walcha Golf Club.
Garden Clubs of Australia president Ken Bradley presented the group with a certificate for its 65 years.
Elizabeth Swane, the daughter of Ben “The Legend” Swane, spoke about her time working at the family nursery, Swane’s Nursery at Dural, for 25 years. For the past 13 years she has been a regular on Sydney gardening talkback Radio 702 on weekends with Simon Marnie.
She was the chief gardening writer and horticultural consultant for Burke’s Backyard magazine and is now the garden editor for Central West Lifestyle and freelances for other magazines.
