MIKAELA Short just missed a gold medal at the recent Australian Schools Sports Association swimming championships in Adelaide.
The Year 5 St Edward’s Primary School student in Tamworth swam 32.72secs in her 50m butterfly final only to be touched out by a young opponent who recorded 32.68secs.
Short had been the fastest qualifier after winning her heat in 32.60secs.
Not to worry, the bubbly 10-year-old said with a big grin.
“I did win a gold in the relay,” she said of her butterfly leg for the NSW team and she also finished fifth in her 100m freestyle final, recording a 69sec time to the winner’s 65secs.
A member of the Scully Park Swimming Club, she had been training “eight times a week” in preparation for Adelaide.
It was a rigorous program for the talented young swimmer who had also been in good form at local, Polding and NSW carnivals.
It was her first national carnival and she hopes to return for more.
