KENSELL’S Holden is helping drive an increase in junior girls’ umpires.
The Tamworth car dealer has for the past two years supported the Tamworth Junior Girls umpires with their sponsorship, helping the association establish and run an umpire development program.
The program has so far proved a success.
Last year there were 20 girls involved, with the experienced girls the teachers or walkers for the learner umpires, Tamworth Junior Girls publicity officer Jacqui Powell said.
“Some of these learner umpires progressed to their Community level in 2012 and have returned to the program in 2013 as the teachers for the next group of learners,” Powell said.
She said through Kensells’ sponsorship they have been able to purchase uniforms for the umpires so they look the part as well as offer a small payment to the experienced girls, who are helping teach every Saturday morning.
This year they were also able to purchase some all-weather jackets for the girls to wear while they are umpiring, and have, Powell said, had another group of girls progress to the Community level.
“We are starting to see the results of this program already in the Monday night secondary competition, with our umpires having more experience and confidence,” she said.
“The ultimate goal is for these girls to progress through to the senior women’s competition.”
She said many girls were already asking about being part of the 2014 program.
