TAMWORTH Public School’s open girls’ basketball side swept aside all its opponents in Bathurst yesterday to win a first ever State PSSA Girls’ Basketball Knockout Final.
A 40-27 victory over Lane Cove entered the Mel Birrell-coached side into the record books for the local school.
Earlier in the day, the side had beaten Central Coast school Wamberal 28-14 in a quarter-final before accounting for Newcastle’s New Lambton Public 50-19 in a semi-final.
It was an exhausted but excited manager Melissa Mack who told The Leader of her side’s brilliant efforts.
“We had three hard games. They are all absolutely exhausted but also very excited,” Mack said.
“The quarter-final against Wamberal was tough,” she said.
“Then we might have won 50-19 against New Lambton but that was tougher and tighter than the score suggests.
“Against Lane Cove it was another hard game,
“At three-quarter time there was just six points in it and it could have gone either way.
“But our girls got feisty and fired up and lifted their game in the final quarter.
“We are extremely proud of them.”
Kate Stacey and Brooklyn Watters were standouts.
“But they all played extremely well and worked hard as a team,” she said.
“Mel Birrell has worked wonders with this side.
“She brought them together at the start of the year and improved them all.
“They have all lifted under coaching and combined so well.”
She said it is Tamworth Public’s first State basketball title.
“Tamworth South won it in 2006 and I think Hillvue won it last year,” she said.
