GROUP 4 SECOND DIVISION LADIES LEAGUE TAG GRAND FINAL

KOOTINGAL pulled off a rare double when it beat Barraba 8-4 in the inaugural Group 4 Second Division Ladies League Tag grand final at Barraba Recreation Ground on Saturday.
The team known as ‘Kootyliscious’ not only went home with the Peter Blom Shield but also went through the first season of the league undefeated.
Captain-coach Zeta Knight said it was great to be the first team to get their name on the shield.
“The girls were amazing and have been all season,” Knight said.
Even though the side was heavy favourite going in, Knight admitted that there was not much sleep had the night before.
“We were really nervous about this game,” Knight said.
“I think it was because we all wanted it so much after the season we have put in.”
“This morning I just told the girls to enjoy it and have some fun, and it seemed to settle them a bit.”
The girls got off to a top start in the sweltering conditions, with player of the match Matilda Shumack running off the hip of Knight to race down the sideline for first points.
A four-point half-time lead was quickly turned into eight points when the Kooty girls crossed not long after the break, and looked like running away with it.
However Barraba fought back on their home ground and got back to within a try, making for a tense finish to the game.
“The Kooty boys and especially Stu Dines have been great for the team this first year, letting us train and play with them and giving us some advice,” Knight said.
“It has been a great team effort and club effort, and we will be back again to do it next season.”
Barraba captain Kelly Phillips was disappointed with the loss but happy with the side’s performance.
“Kooty have been the best all year and we stuck with them today so I am proud of the girls,” Phillips said.
The first year of the ladies’ league was a success despite having just five teams.
