The 37-year-old was then charged with robbery in company armed with a dangerous weapon, be carried in a conveyance without the consent of the owner and supply a prohibited drug. He’s due to front court again on
September 9.
The arrest comes after a nine month investigation by Barwon police. On November 14, 2012, three offenders stormed the local post office and Commonwealth Bank in Walker St, Mungindi, armed with a firearm about midnight.
Once inside they woke the occupants of the business and demanded money before they fled the scene with an amount of cash in the resident’s vehicle.
Police were called in and forensic teams combed the scene for clues.
The white Mitsubishi Magna stolen during the robbery was later found burnt out on the Gwydir Highway.
Police made several appeals for help to identify the offenders before a 26-year-old man was arrested in a Moree car park in January.
He was charged with robbery in company armed with a dangerous weapon and being carried in a conveyance without the consent of the owner.
Less than a week later a second 26-year-old male was arrested, this time at a Chester St home in Moree and charged with the same two offences.
Barwon crime manager Detective Inspector Gavin Rattenbury said it was a good result for local police.
“It is extremely pleasing to have all three offenders responsible brought before the courts – this was a violent and terrifying event for the victims and hopefully these charges will go some way to bringing closure to them,” he said.
“This particular investigation has been ongoing for over eight months and involved both overt and covert strategies in order to execute the arrests of all three offenders.”
Detective Inspector Rattenbury said it was a significant operation that culminated in the arrests this month.
“Detectives have worked long and hard since last November,” he said.
“It is a real credit to officers within the Barwon Detectives office.
“Barwon police would also like to express their gratitude to those members of the public that have assisted police throughout the investigation,” he said.
“It has been said numerous times but it is true – even the smallest piece of information can be extremely important to investigators and as a community we need to reinforce that this behaviour will not be tolerated.”
