9.45am A married couple from the United States and Japan died after their scooter collided with a truck on the City West Link at Haberfield. Police said they believe the man and woman, both aged 33, were weaving in between lanes.

3.20pm Steven Butcher, 27, of Kundabung, and Haylee Jones, 19, from Queensland, were killed when their Holden Commodore hit a tree at Lake Innes, near Port Macquarie. Police believe the pair were ejected after they hit a tree at high speeds. Ms Jones' older brother Kyl Jones posted on Facebook: "She was [taken] from us at such a young age and I just can't believe she left us. She [will] be missed and I hope somewhere up there she can see down upon us knowing we love you Haylee and hope u having a ball up there. RIP sis u always will b in my heart and everyone else's."

A friend of Mr Butcher, Jenny Hayley Maree Brown, said she was supposed to see him the day he was killed. "And now you're gone and were taken from us way too soon and the reality has set in that I wont be hearing from you. I am so thankful for those memories that I do have of you. You will be missed. I send my deepest heartfelt condolences out to especially your family and friends and to those who knew you," she posted on Facebook.

4.20pm Timothy Needs, 54, of South West Rocks, died when his Toyota Land Cruiser crashed into a tree at Arakoon on the state's mid north coast. Police say his death was the only one out of seven which did not involve human error. Mr Needs was well known in his community and was the was president of the SWR sports association. He had led a long campaign for improved sporting facilities for the town of South West Rocks. The land valuer also opened the batting for the SWR cricket team in the local first-grade competition.

6pm Kevin Marshall, 84, died while crossing the road on a motorised scooter outside his home at Southern Cross St Martha's resident village in Banora Point. He was hit by a Toyota Tarago. Police say staff at the nursing home had warned Mr Marshall 20 to 30 times to use a pedestrian crossing which was about 60 metres from the crash site. Mr Marshall was a retired school teacher who had lived in the retirement village for two years. "He was a real gentleman. He loved jazz and he was very active, he taught the staff how to salsa. He was just a really nice, engaging and intelligent man," said Paul McMahon, chief executive of Southern Cross Care NSW/ACT.

7.20pm Part-time model and beautician Sarah Durazza was killed instantly when her white Holden Barina left the Wakehurst Parkway and hit a tree at Narrabeen on Sydney's northern beaches. Police believe the 26-year-old was on the phone to her boyfriend at the time of the crash.
