Duval High P and C’s Rachael Sowden took the unusual step of tweeting the Premier and emcee Adam Marshall to get a turn on the community cabinet floor and it worked.

Ms Sowden asked when it was likely a local school, like Duval, could get access to the NBN, in a trial capacity, like non-government schools could.

Minister Piccoli said they were looking into it.

“We want a tightly controlled trial in schools because we think it is a very important thing to have access to high speed internet,” he said.

But the minister said they need to tick all the boxes first.

“Schools are connected through the department zones and you can understand there are a number of fire walls,” Minister Piccoli told the meeting.

“Connecting to the NBN directly would simply mean students can access anything.

“Child protection is something we have to take very seriously and the department it doing that, but we’re working on it.”

Ms Sowden said after the meeting she was happy with the response.

“If they can organise the child protection stuff then certainly they would be going that way,” she said.

Ms Sowden said a public meeting at the school got a resounding wave of support in favour of securing a trial at the school.

“Having that access just means they can do video conferencing and we have a sister school arrangement with a school in Korea so that would push the Asian-century learning,” she said.
