A REPORT will be prepared for the coroner following the death of a man in Tamworth yesterday afternoon.
About 3.30pm a suspicious motor vehicle was sighted in the City Plaza car park, off Fitzroy St.
Tamworth Acting Inspector Geoff Sharpe said police went to the scene where a suspected male later died.
“Due to the possible presence of toxic materials, police contacted Fire and Rescue NSW’s hazardous materials unit,” he said.
“The advice received led to the forced evacuation of the neighbouring Conservatorium of Music and the City Plaza car park.”
An exclusion zone was immediately set up.
Tamworth Regional Council crews were called in after the closure of Marius and Fitzroy streets, while City Plaza Management closed the car park to customers.
Acting Inspector Sharpe said ambulance and Fire and Rescue crews were also called to the scene.
“The hazardous materials unit arrived on scene and removed some toxic materials,” he said.
“Police are currently conducting an investigation into the incident.”
No one else was injured.
